Return Policy

Amazon has one of the more generous return policies among major retailers. Most items qualify for the standard return window, with extended benefits available depending on your membership or payment method.

Standard 30 days from deliveryFree if defective, damaged, or wrong item; buyer pays for preference/error returnsUp to 20% for non-media items returned damaged; up to 100% for opened software/gamesNo — digital order history serves as proof of purchasePerishables, hazmat, digital content, customized items, trading cards, collectibles, marked Final Sale

Key Exception: Some high-value electronics — including laptops, gaming consoles, and smart home devices — may require return initiation within 15 calendar days of delivery for a full refund without a restocking fee. Amazon also charges a $1 convenience fee for UPS drop-off returns when a free return location (Kohl's, Whole Foods, or Amazon store) is within reasonable proximity.

Stacking Tips

Combine multiple discount types in a single transaction. These are the most effective stacking combinations at Amazon.

1

The Subscribe & Save Stack

Subscribe & Save (5–15%) + Clipped digital coupon (5–40%)

Navigate to a consumable product, select Subscribe & Save, then clip the digital coupon displayed on the product page before checking out. Amazon allows these to stack — effective savings can reach 20–35%+ on eligible items. Cancel the subscription after the first delivery if you only want the one-time discount.

2

The Triple Stack

Subscribe & Save (15%) + Digital coupon (20%) + Prime Visa cashback (5%)

On top of the S&S + coupon stack, pay with the Amazon Prime Visa card to earn an additional 5% back as Amazon reward dollars. On a $50 order, this combination can yield an effective net price of ~$30 — about 40% off total.

3

The Portal + Sale Stack

Sale discount (20–50%) + Clipped digital coupon + Rakuten / cashback portal (1–15%) + Rewards credit card (1–5%)

Start your Amazon session by clicking through a cashback portal like Rakuten before landing on Amazon. Shop during a sale event, clip any available coupon on the product page, and pay with a rewards card. Note: some portals exclude purchases made with external coupon codes — read the portal's terms first.

4

The Prime Day Lightning Stack

Lightning Deal (20–60%) + Prime Visa cashback (5%) + No-Rush Shipping reward ($0.99–$1.99 credit)

During Prime Day, watch for Lightning Deals on items you want. Since Lightning Deals cannot stack with coupons or S&S, your best complementary layers are credit card cashback and choosing No-Rush Shipping (if timing allows), which earns an additional promotional credit toward a future digital purchase.

Price Match Policy

Amazon's price match guarantee lets you claim a lower price from qualifying competitors — both at the time of purchase and up to 14 days after. Knowing the rules can save you from overpaying on big-ticket items.

No Formal Policy

Amazon does not offer a competitor price match. There is no program to match Walmart, Target, or Best Buy prices at the time of purchase or after the fact.

Dynamic Pricing

Amazon's pricing algorithms automatically adjust prices millions of times per day, often matching or undercutting competitors before shoppers ask.

Pre-Order Price Guarantee

If a pre-ordered eligible item drops in price between your order date and the ship date, Amazon automatically charges you the lower price.

Qualifying Competitors

Exclusions

  • No competitor price matching of any kind
  • No post-purchase price adjustments based on competitor pricing
  • No price matching for third-party marketplace sellers on Amazon
If a price drops after your purchase and you're still within the 30-day return window, return the item and repurchase it at the new lower price. This is Amazon's de facto price protection workaround.
